  • Tell us a little about yourself. Where is your practice? Where did you attend dental hygiene school and take your RDHAP training?

I’m Lindsey Vizcay, BSDH, RDHAP, RDAEF,2 and I own and operate Home Sweet Hygiene, a mobile dental hygiene practice based in Solano County. I graduated from West Coast University in 2012 with my Bachelor of Science in Dental Hygiene and later completed my RDHAP training through the University of the Pacific. I’ve been in the dental field for over a decade and come from a multi-generational dental family, so I feel like preventive care is truly in my roots!

  • What made you decide to become an RDHAP?

Before I entered the dental field, I earned my Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Saint Mary’s College. I’ve always been drawn to both health care and entrepreneurship, and becoming an RDHAP gave me the unique opportunity to merge those passions.

While a big part of my “why” has always been serving those with limited access to care, especially individuals with special needs or mobility challenges, another major reason I chose this path was the flexibility it offers. As a mom of young children, building a practice that lets me serve my community and be present for my family has been a gift.

Running my own mobile practice allows me to create a schedule that works for my life, while still showing up fully for the people who need this kind of care the most. It has allowed me to take dental hygiene beyond the office walls and serve patients in the comfort of their own environments, whether that’s their home, school, or community settings.

It’s the perfect balance, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything.

  • What type of RDHAP practice do you have? Do you practice where the patients live, work, and go to school? Do you have a free-standing office?

Home Sweet Hygiene is fully mobile. I travel to where patients live or go to school, providing care in homes, adult residential facilities, preschools, and community-based locations. I specialize in serving individuals with developmental disabilities, sensory sensitivities, and elderly patients with limited mobility or memory challenges – using individualized desensitization strategies to make dental visits more approachable and comfortable.

My practice also includes regular school-based visits and outreach through partnerships with early childhood programs and community centers to provide screenings, oral health education, and preventive care to underserved children and families.

  • What do you do if you find your dental hygiene patient needs to see a dentist for care?

I work closely with local dental offices and support families through the referral process. When appropriate, I provide oral health reports, photo documentation, and recommendations to help ensure continuity of care. My role often includes helping caregivers advocate for their loved ones and navigate access barriers.

  • How do your patients pay for your services?

Most of my patients are covered by Denti-Cal, and I’m a proud Medi-Cal provider! For uninsured patients, I partner with community organizations and apply for grants to help cover preventive care at no cost to families whenever possible. I also offer a fee-for-service option for uninsured patients or those with insurance plans I’m not contracted with, and I assist with billing to help them seek reimbursement.

  • Once you complete their dental hygiene care, then what?

I provide personalized follow-up recommendations and education to families, caregivers, or staff. I also offer ongoing care plans and return visits as needed, especially for patients needing additional support to become more comfortable with routine hygiene.

  • Is there anything else you would like to share with patients, family members, or other health professionals who care for people who can’t care for themselves?

Yes – oral health is often overlooked, but it’s deeply connected to comfort, dignity, and overall well-being. For individuals with disabilities or complex needs, compassionate dental hygiene care in a familiar environment can be life-changing. If you’ve ever struggled to find someone patient enough, flexible enough, or skilled enough to provide that care, just know we’re out here – and we truly care.
